Industrial Effluent Treatment
Norlite is an expanded and milled filter aid derived from the naturally occurring volcanic mineral perlite. A filter aid is a finely divided material that when added to the filtrate helps control flow and solids removal. Filter aid filtration is mechanical not chemical in nature. Irregular shaped particles interlock creating a matrix that leaves 85 - 95% voids. The size of these voids is so minute that the unwanted solids are strained from the liquid. This vast number of voids compensates for their small size resulting in fast flow rates and brilliant clarity. Norlite filter aids are light in weight, chemically inert and form high porosity filter cakes. Norlite is available in a wide variety of particle distributions to suit the solids removal requirement of any application.
In the picture below it is possible to see how a perlite filter aid works:

Typical Applications for Norlite filter aids: Norlite filter aids are used in the manufacture of the following products:
Vegetable Oils - cotton seed oil, olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil.
Beverages - beer, lager, apple juice, grape juice, wine.
Food Manufacture - agar, cane sugar, lemon juice, vinegar.
Sugar Manufacture - beet sugar liquor, raw sugar liquor (high raw remelt), cane sugar, dextrose, corn syrup, glucose.
Chemical Manufacture - phosphoric acid, Rochelle salts, antibiotics, lanolin, sodium chloride, Epsom salts, streptomycin, tetramycin, alginates, citric acid, soda ash, sodium silicate, sulphuric acid, brine in caustic soda, paints, waxes, gums, plastics, titanium dioxide, fertilisers, resins.
Other Applications - slop oil, cutting oils, tallow, paper mill white water, aluminium and ferric hydroxide flocs, fuel oil, lubrication oil, swimming pool water treatment, solvent recovery.
